FAQs: General

How Do I Care for My Jewelry?

To extend the life of your pieces, please handle them with care and put them on after applying makeup, perfume, hair and body products. Be sure to remove them before bathing, swimming or sleeping and to store them away from objects that may damage them.

Some semiprecious stones can dull or change color over time if not properly maintained. To clean them, use warm water, a drop of soft detergent and a gentle brush. Gently remove soap with a soft damp cloth and dry completely with a soft dry cloth such as a chamois. Commercial jewelry cleaners are generally safe but always check to make sure they are safe to use on your particular gemstone. A toothpick can be used to gently dislodge any debris stuck in hard-to-reach spots. Tarnish on any metal components can be cleaned by wiping with a jewelry polishing cloth.

For care specific to polymer clay items, please see the FAQs: Polymer Clay section below.

What Metals Do You Use for Earring Posts and Ear Wires?

All earring posts are either stainless steel or gold plated. Ear wires may be gold plated, brass, copper, silver plated or sterling silver. All metals used for posts, ear wires, jump rings, clasps and other components are listed in the item description.

Why Are There Little Imperfections in My Jewelry?

Simply put, because it is made by hand.  While I take great care in finishing each individual piece so that it is as beautiful and polished as possible when you receive it, some pieces may have minor imperfections and no two pieces will be exactly the same. These irregularities are part of the charm of handmade jewelry.

Why Buy From a Small Business?

When you shop with Apartment24, you can be confident that your purchase is one-of-a-kind and completely handmade. You will also have direct contact with the business owner should any questions or issues arise. Last but not least, you will be helping to support an artisan in doing what she loves.

FAQs: Polymer Clay

What is Polymer Clay?

Polymer clay is a plastic-based modeling clay that becomes hard after it is cured in an oven.

What is So Special About Polymer Clay Jewelry?

Polymer clay is extremely lightweight and comes in a wide array of beautiful colors, which can make for truly unique, easy to wear jewelry. Each piece of Apartment24 clay jewelry is designed and handmade from start to finish by yours truly and is created in small batches in my home. Because it is made by hand, each piece is one-of-a-kind and perfectly imperfect.

How Do I Care for My Polymer Clay Jewelry?

Cured polymer clay is durable and slightly flexible, but it can get scratched or broken if mishandled around hard or sharp objects or if it is bent with enough force. To extend the life of your pieces, please handle them with care and put them on after applying makeup, perfume, hair and body products. Be sure to remove them before bathing, swimming or sleeping and to store them away from objects that may damage them.

Makeup, oil and other debris can be removed with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Tarnish on any metal components can be cleaned by wiping with a jewelry polishing cloth.

Is Polymer Clay Safe?

Polymer clay is considered non-toxic but not food safe.

Is Polymer Clay Eco-Friendly?

Polymer clay is not a natural material; however, if stored correctly, uncured clay does not dry out. Therefore, it can be used indefinitely and does not need to be discarded. Even clay scraps (including ones already cured) can be recycled into new jewelry pieces thus greatly reducing waste. In addition, Apartment24 packaging is recyclable.
